You’ve done it. You’ve Kevin McCallister’d your children, Home Alone style, and are now sitting on an airplane bound for the (best) Hawaiian island in all the land – Maui. Or perhaps you’re on a romantic honeymoon getaway, still on a high from all the centerpiece-planning, or are taking a much needed break from the sweeping Cincinnati skyline to do what you love best… play Twister in your board shorts along the warm shores of your favorite Kihei beach.
Whatever the reason you’re traveling to Maui with only other adults – or only yourself – as a companion, we’re here to offer our recommendations for accommodation, activities and local must-do’s for those sans-keiki travel on The Valley Isle.
Kids-Free Travel Guide to Maui
Where to Stay
Private Condo: Tracy’s Tropical Treasures
Located only steps from the quiet Kalepolepo Beach in North Kihei, guests at Tracy’s Tropical Treasures can choose from four private luxury condos, ideal for couples enjoying a romantic getaway or a solo traveler looking for the perfect location from which to explore more of Maui. While the condos aren’t limited to adults only, they are ultra gorgeous and come thoughtfully stocked with everything you could possibly need to experience the sexy side of Maui – robes, bamboo linens, twinkling LED and adjustable mood lighting, custom picnic baskets, private lanais, a sound soother machine, espresso machine and a complex hot tub and pool.
Adults-Only Suite: Hotel Wailea
As far as hotels go, Hotel Wailea is the only one (we’re aware of) with a kid-free requirement. Home to stunning Japanese-inspired architecture and an elevated location with panoramic views of Maui’s shoreline, Molokini Crater and the uninhabited island of Kaho’olawe, this 15-acre resort is about as luxurious, uncrowded (with only 72 total suites) and picturesque as you could hope for without making the trek to Hana. Lounge by the pool in a private cabana while sipping a fresh craft cocktail, or join one of the hotel’s many complimentary activities like aerial silks, outrigger canoeing, tropical mixology, flower crown making and more to boost your extracurriculars.
What to Do
Sunset Dinner Sail: Sail Trilogy
What do you get when you combine a premium open bar, multi-course dinner and a Maui sunset? A major life win, dear readers, and also an ideal evening on one of the most gorgeous island destinations in the world. Sail Trilogy offers an adults-only Sunset Dinner Sail aboard their luxury catamaran, which also doubles as an excellent whale watching opportunity from November to April. Sit back with a glass of Prosecco, craft Moloka’i Mule or locally brewed Bikini Blonde, and enjoy table service, freshly caught island fish and amazing views of the Pali sea cliffs.
Ultimate Craft Adventure: Maui Craft Tours
While guests 16 and over are invited to participate in all Maui Craft Tours, our Ultimate Craft Adventure is our most in-depth – and therefore adult-friendly – craft food and drink tour option. Sample locally-roasted coffee before hopping aboard our private shuttle for a drive Upcountry, where you’ll taste wine at Maui’s only winery, enjoy a farm-to-table lunch with a view, go on a private tour of the Hawaii Sea Spirits Organic Distillery (and sample Ocean Vodka and Deep Wave Rum), experience a behind-the-scenes tour and craft beer tasting at Maui Brewing Company, and relax with a craft cocktail and artisanal pupus at The Mill House.
Haleakala Crater Hike: Sliding Sands Trail
While you’re likely to see travelers of all ages on a majority of popular hiking trails on Maui, the Sliding Sands Trail is definitely an exception, mostly due to the fact that children and strenuous 11 mile hikes don’t often mix well. That being said, Sliding Sands Trail is one of the best, most unique hikes on Maui due to its location within Haleakala Crater, and one we highly recommend for advanced hikers seeking an otherworldly experience. Beginning at the eastern side of the Haleakala Visitor Center parking area, the Sliding Sands Trail descends 2,800 feet in the first 4 miles (before going right back uphill). Visitors can reserve a night at Kapalaoa cabin, and should prepare with lots of layers, ample sun protection, and plenty of water and food.
How to Relax
Lomi Lomi Massage: Maui’s Best Massage
While the top resorts on Maui are also home to 5 star spas and spa treatments, our definition of ultimate pampering and relaxation often involves putting forth the least amount of effort possible. Fortunately, the team at Maui’s Best Massage comes directly to your condo or hotel room (with the option to go into their Wailea studio location), meaning you can go from your pajamas to the massage table in seconds. While guests can choose from popular massage styles like Relaxation, Deep Tissue and Couple/Group Massages, the Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage is our top pick for massage goodness.
